Transportation

Connecting to the World

At the center of the bi-national region, McAllen is conveniently accessible by many Expressways and Highways. The east-west corridor, U.S. Expressway 83, directly connects to the primary north-south highways US281 and US77, which lead to I-37 and I-69. McAllen is constantly improving its infrastructure with annual spending totaling $30 million. Up and coming projects include super highway I-69, that will extend from Mexico City to Canada.

More Than a Bridge

McAllen is serviced by nine international bridges that connect the United States to Mexico. These valuable bridges create a constant flow of visitors and shoppers, accounting for 30 million bridges crossings each year.

The McAllen International Airport (MFE) is owned and operated by the City of McAllen. Built in 1993, the airport, with its beautiful palm and mesquite trees and gleaming interior terrazzo floors, serves over 700,000 passengers annually with at least 16 daily departures.  As the Rio Grande Valley’s premier airport, MFE continues to experience a double-digit increase in the number of passengers utilizing the airport.  It is conveniently located near McAllen’s best shopping locations, including La Plaza Mall and Palms Crossing Shopping Center, as well as the McAllen Convention Center.

The airport just recently completed an expansion that added 55,000 square feet of additional space to the terminal. This resulted in the expansion of the TSA security checkpoint and checked baggage inspection system for passenger convenience; additional food and retail locations; one additional gate, new furnishings and more hold room seating; the addition of a mesmerizing, lighted water column with colorful LED lights; and digital signage throughout the terminal and behind each of the airline ticket counters. All of the improvements have given the terminal a more modern, urban feel that appeals to a diverse group of passengers.

United and American Airlines each offer daily, non-stop service from McAllen to Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth. Allegiant Air offers non-stop service to Las Vegas and seasonal service to Orlando, Florida and Los Angeles, California.  Aeromar offers non-stop service from McAllen to Mexico City and San Luis Potosi, Mexico. With more daily departures than any other airport in the Rio Grande Valley, the MFE offers you more ways to get you where you need to go!

Amenities include free wireless internet access, electronic charging stations within the seating areas, a restaurant, bar, gift shop, shoe shine service, seven (7) on airport rental car counters, six (6) airline gates, and easy access parking lots.  Parking lots are available for short term, long term and economy parking.  Rates are different for each lot but are reasonably priced to accommodate everyone’s budget.

With its convenient location and amenities abound, the McAllen International Airport is the Rio Grande Valley’s premier airport ready to serve you!
